I really enjoyed talking to David Odell, who jointly owns Odell's ironmonger's in Stony Stratford, a couple of weeks ago. He and his brother have developed an old outbuilding they own next to the shop and opened up a little cookshop in it. They'd always done kitchenware before, but David told me that giving it its own focus and adding in some new ranges had sent takings through the roof - they're about 500% up on what they had been.

Forget all the frequently-contradictory figures put out by the likes of the Office for National Statistics, the British Retail Consortium, the big mortgage lenders, etc, etc. Consumer confidence is on the up, and that's guaranteed, according to Mintel's latest report on the bottled water market.
