Matalan has joined a host of other high street names in reporting strong growth over Christmas.

Like-for-like sales at the cut-price fashion and homewares retailer were up 13.7% in the five weeks to January 2, an improvement on those of the autumn.
Matalan said that it had stuck firmly with its normal promotional stance and had not gone for any deeper discounting.
In the 13 weeks to January 2 total sales rose 10.4% to £362m, while like-for-likes put on 9.3%.
Several parties are currently thought to be interested in taking over the privately-owned company.
