Alworths hits trouble with Woolies’ owners

The imminent launch this week of Woolies lookalike chain Alworths has upset the owners of the Woolworths brand.

Alworths hits trouble with Woolies’ owners

Solicitors acting for Shop Direct, which runs Woolworths as an online retailer, have written to Alworths saying that its name is too similar to that of Woolworths. According to the Financial Times, if it does not change its name it will face further legal action.

The first branch of Alworths, which is planning 50 stores, is set to open its doors this Thursday in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

Shop Direct says it has taken the action it has because it may itself want to revive Woolworths in the high street.
