Discount department store operator TJ Hughes has reported like-for-like sales growth of 4% over the Christmas period.

Not included in the figures are sales from stores opened last year, which have exceeded expectations.

Chief executive Sue Tennant commented: “We are extremely pleased with this third year of consistent strong Christmas trading, which is testament to our continued understanding of our customers and an awareness of the environment.


“We’re evolving our strategy to embrace more divisions and strengthen a diverse range of retail items.”

TJ Hughes, which has 52 stores, increased turnover 9.1% to £261.3m in its year to January 31 2009.
