Brits celebrate National Tea Day

Today (Friday April 21) is National Tea Day.

To commemorate the nation’s love for the great British cuppa, hotel chain Premier Inn has polled 1,000 consumers to find out which city drinks the most tea, and the preferred strengths of this hot beverage.

As a nation we consume 205 million cups of tea every day and a quarter of people in the UK drink at least five cups daily.

Premier Inn’s research has revealed that top 12 cities for cuppas consumed daily are:

  1. London – 25.9 million cups of tea drunk a day
  2. Birmingham – 3.7 million cups of tea drunk a day
  3. Leeds – 2.6 million cups of tea drunk a day
  4. Glasgow – 2.2 million cups of tea drunk a day
  5. Manchester – 1.7 million cups of tea drunk a day
  6. Edinburgh – 1.3 million cups of tea drunk a day
  7. Cardiff – 1.1 million cups of tea drunk a day
  8. Belfast – 1.1 million cups of tea drunk a day
  9. Newcastle – 930,000 cups of tea drunk a day
  10. Liverpool – 800,000 cups of tea drunk a day
  11. Bristol – 740,000 cups of tea drunk a day
  12. Plymouth – 260,000 cups of tea drunk a day

In terms of optimum tea strength, almost half of respondents said cup number three (pictured) would be the perfect for them

Edinburgh is the city that’s most likely to opt for the strongest tea shown in the chart. One in seven residents of the Scottish capital said cup number one would be the preferred strength for them.
