Mug collecting is among Britain’s top 10 home obsessions, according to new research from Tradefix Direct, which examined the nation’s favourite ornaments and collectables.
The study found that mug collections attracted an average of 30,478 online searches per month in the UK, placing them ninth in a ranking of more than 35 household collectables.
With an example price of £20, mugs were among the more affordable items featured in the top 10, highlighting their appeal as both practical household essentials and collectable pieces.
The research, published in October 2026, analysed online search volumes alongside discussions on Reddit to identify the items attracting the greatest interest among British consumers.
Mug collections received 14 Reddit comments and appeared in six separate threads included in the analysis, earning an overall popularity score of 56 out of 99.
While mugs made the top 10, garden gnomes topped the overall rankings with a score of 99, attracting 40,740 monthly searches and 124 Reddit comments.
Plush toy collections followed closely behind with a score of 98, recording more than 1.6 million monthly searches, while taxidermy, skulls and bones placed third.
Other items featured in the rankings included Funko Pops, wind chimes, fridge magnets, crystals and vintage clocks.
The findings suggest that collecting everyday household items remains a popular hobby, with relatively inexpensive products allowing consumers to build collections over time.
Paul Kershaw from Tradefix Direct said: “A home is one of the few places where people get to show who they are, and small objects do that job cheaply.
“A small ornament, a collectible or a set of mugs costs very little compared with new furniture, but it changes how a room or garden feels.
“Collecting gives people something to look forward to as well. Finding the next piece, adding it to the display, and sharing it with friends or online communities becomes a hobby in itself.
“Hobbies like this are easy to keep up when budgets are tight, because these purchases are usually small.”
