Consumers give housework the big thumbs-down

Over 46m Brits hate at least one household chore, and as many as 10m loathe any form of housework altogether.

Consumers give housework the big thumbs-down

New research from Mintel finds that the top three most hated tasks are cleaning the oven, with 64% dreading this task, followed by ironing (56%) and cleaning the windows (39%).

Today, almost half of women go out to work, but housework is still more likely to fall to them, the survey reveals. Some 47% of all women are resigned to the fact that keeping their home clean and tidy is their responsibility, while just 18% of men are of the same view.

Mintel says that, valued at nearly £4.4bn, the UK market for household cleaning products has seen steady growth of 17% since 2003.
