Cookshop sales of bakeware and cake decorating equipment continue to boom – and the main driver is cup cakes.

In an exclusive survey in the latest – July – issue of Housewares Magazine, 30% of retailer respondents said that bakeware sales were much better than this time last year, and 21% a bit better – 51% in total.
And when asked about sales of icing and cake decorating equipment, 39% found sales much better than a year ago, and 9% a bit better – a combined figure of 48%.
As a result, in the last 12 months 39% of those surveyed had allocated more space to the sector.
Retailers think the baking bonanza is set to continue too: a total of 71% were optimistic about sales over the year ahead, with 21% very positive and 50% fairly positive.
There is no doubt about the main focus of home baking. When asked about current trends the replies were unequivocal: “Cup cake making”; “CUP CAKES”; “Cup cakes, edible glitter, gift packaging”; “Cup cakes, cases, boxes, decorations, cup cake towers, cup cake tins”; “Definitely cup cakes”; “Cup cakes, wedding/celebration cakes”; “Anything for cup cakes and muffins that’s pretty and decorative”.
