Debenhams recruits 7,000 staff for Christmas

Debenhams has filled 7,000 Christmas jobs across its 165 UK stores ‘to help give the best customer service possible at Christmas’.

The department store group is also mobilising volunteers from its central functions, with 500 people from its London HQ going out to their local stores to help over the peak trading period.

The retailer said it has taken ‘a fresh approach to its Christmas recruitment drive this year, hiring colleagues not just with retail experience but from the hospitality industry too. This is about ensuring shoppers across the country enjoy an unforgettable shopping experience supported by enthusiastic staff who are dedicated to going the extra mile’.

The range of flexible positions that Debenhams has recruited for includes on the sales floor, in its beauty halls, serving in the restaurant and behind the scenes in stock management.

All new staff have been given special training ‘to ensure they’re ready to put the fun into the festivities over the holiday season’. They will be on hand to advise customers how to shop for gifts, including personalised items, from the retailer’s range of 3-for-2 offers – billed as the biggest range in UK retail.

The 7,000 new recruits will start in time for Debenhams’ big Black Friday promotion on November 29.

Darren Kay, regional manager for Debenhams, said: “Our current team of colleagues are a testament to the local workforce, and we are delighted to welcome our new recruits. We have 109 new employees joining us this Christmas in our Oxford Street store alone and many colleagues that work with us over this period stay on as permanent members of staff, so it is a crucial time in our recruitment calendar and a great opportunity for those seeking a career in retail.”
