Electricals are star performers again at John Lewis

John Lewis saw sales rise by 7.6% in the week to August 17, with electricals and home technology once again the star performers.

The electrical and home technology departments excelled, with sales up 19.7%, buoyed by strong growth online.

It was a tougher week for the home departments, where sales dropped by 0.5%, although a ‘Back to University’ promotion in furnishing accessories performed well, as did sales of lighting.

However, with the new ‘Home’ publication launched, containing distinct shopping ‘themes’ covering the whole assortment, the retailer said there is a great deal of anticipation that this initiative will drive sales.

In the stores, it was a particularly good week for the ‘at home’ shops, with double digit growth seen in the Tamworth, Swindon, Croydon and Tunbridge Wells stores.

John Lewis director of retail services Barry Matheson said: “Last week’s sales produced another very satisfactory performance, continuing the solid set of results we’ve seen throughout August.

“We enter the final week of August in good form and the bank holiday weekend gives us numerous opportunities to capture trade from the additional footfall that will be in our shops.”
