Mailen Design has been commissioned to “sensitively reimagine” the department store retailer’s original store frontage of the 1880’s building. The planning consent also includes opening up the ground floor windows, as well constructing a modern new canopy and grand central entrance on Northumberland Street.

Currently, works have included the completion of one of two central atria, enhancing the building’s interior, alongside the ongoing refurbishment of the beauty hall.

Fenwick Newcastle store director, Kieran McBride, said: “Our flagship store has remained a treasured part of the city centre since opening in 1882, and its evolution marks a continuing connection to Newcastle, and commitment to the city’s future.

“Improving accessibility and enhancing the customer experience will allow the store to remain the destination of choice for shoppers across the region.”
