Gifts and Cook & Dine sales up 3.2% for John Lewis

Total sales for John Lewis last week (to Saturday September 23) were £87.3m – up 6.5% on last year – with both shops and online seeing growth.

EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) buying director Johnathan Marsh said Home sales were up 0.6% for the week. “Gifts and Cook & Dine saw sales climb 3.2% as customers continue to purchase ‘back to university’ items and also begin to look ahead to Halloween and Christmas,” he commented. Elsewhere, lighting was up 5.4% and sales of textiles and home accessories rose by 1.9%.

Johnathan added that EHT sales were up 11.1%, “driven by strong mobile sales due to the Apple launch. Accessories also enjoyed a good week, again influenced by Apple, and also by the launch of own-brand phone cases”.

Fashion sales were up 8.6%. Womenswear saw an uplift of 18.2% driven by strong sales of cold weather clothing and the price-matching of a competitor’s promotion. Menswear also experienced double-digit growth, with sales up 13.4%.
