Home sales up 1.9% for John Lewis

Total sales for John Lewis last week (to Saturday July 15) were £86.4 million: up 4% compared with last year.

Sales of all departments grew in the period, which was the last week of summer Clearance,

Home sales rose 1.9% due to sales Clearance lines. Sales of Furniture and Flooring were particularly strong, ending the week up 5.8%.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 9.9% as customers made the most of Clearance offers. Communications Technology, which includes mobile phones and tablets, saw sales grow by 29%.

According to Liz Mihell, head of shop trade, London and South East for the department store group, it was the strongest week so far this financial year for sales of photography equipment, as customers began preparing for their summer holidays.

Fashion sales were up 1% with Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure sales growing the most, followed by Menswear. Casual menswear was most in demand due to the warm weather and customers buying clothing for their holiday wardrobes.
