Inflatables, fans and royal wedding fever hits John Lewis

Total sales for John Lewis last week (to Saturday May 5) were up 1% on last year.

Maggie Porteous, director of shop trade for the department store group, said: “Sales rose due to customers buying products for the warm weather and enjoying offers as we price-matched a competitor’s promotion.”

She added: “Home sales were down 0.6% – though sales of furniture and flooring were up 14.8%. Sales of seasonal home products were up 20%, primarily due to strong demand for inflatable products bought by customers planning to enjoy the hot weather. We’re also seeing very strong demand for royal wedding related products.”

Electrical and home technology products were down 1.1%. However, sales of TVs and mobile phones were strong, and for the second consecutive week John Lewis posted high demand for fans with sales up 34% year-on-year.

Fashion sales were up 4.3%. Womenswear sales were up 9.2% and sales of women’s accessories were up 6.8% including sunglasses, which were up 20%. Sales of beauty, wellbeing and leisure products were up 5.5%.
