Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has officially launched its Joybuy platform in Britain, positioning itself as a direct challenger to established players including Amazon and Argos. With a valuation of around £30bn and status as China’s largest retailer by revenue, the company’s entry marks one of the most significant shake-ups in the UK online retail market in years.
From day one, Joybuy is offering British consumers a vast product range spanning technology, home appliances, beauty, groceries and homewares. The platform also features dedicated brand storefronts from names such as Braun, De’Longhi, BRITA and Bodum.
Logistics will be central to that strategy. Operating from distribution hubs in Milton Keynes and Luton, Joybuy is promising next-day delivery to around 17 million UK households. In some cases, customers in major cities can expect even faster fulfilment, with orders placed before 11am arriving the same day, and late-evening purchases delivered the following day.
The move follows a shift in approach from JD.com after it walked away from potential acquisitions of major UK retailers Currys in 2024 and Argos the following year. Rather than buying into the market, the company has chosen to build its own infrastructure and customer base from the ground up.
According to Matthew Nobbs, Managing Director of Joybuy UK, the business is confident it can carve out a meaningful share of the market. He points to a combination of competitive pricing and convenience as key differentiators — alongside a logistics model designed to meet rising consumer expectations around speed.
Crucially, JD.com is not treating the UK as a short-term test. “We are here for a long time,” Mr Nobbs said, echoing the company’s wider commitment to establishing a lasting presence in the country.
The UK launch is part of a wider European expansion, with Joybuy rolling out simultaneously in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. This follows JD.com’s €2.2bn (£1.9bn) acquisition of German electronics retail group Ceconomy, strengthening its foothold across the region.
