John Lewis customers get ready for the heatwave

Total sales for John Lewis & Partners last week (to Saturday July 20) were up 1.3% in the department store group’s final week of Summer clearance.

The retailer’s buying director of EHT (Electrical and Home Technology) Laurence Mitchell said: “We had a particularly strong Saturday in our shops. Home sales were up 0.9%. It was a good week in Textiles & Home Accessories with sales up 7.7% largely driven by sales of bedding, with Bed & Bath up 9.5%.

“Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 1.0%. Customers were getting their gardens ready for the heatwave, with lawn mowers up 400%. We are also well set up for this week with good availability of fans.

“Fashion sales were up 3.8% as customers shopped Clearance final markdowns. Womenswear Accessories performed particularly well with sales up 9%, driven by sales of handbags.”
