John Lewis weekly sales down 3.5%

Total sales for John Lewis & Partners were down 3.5% last week (to Saturday January 26) on the same week last year.

The department store group’s buying director for home Johnathan Marsh said the results came ”as we annualised strong Clearance sales”. He said: “We saw customers beginning to buy new season products and products to keep warm in the cold weather.”

Johnathan added: “Home sales were down 7.2%. Estimator appointments for windows and flooring were up 9% and 6% respectively, as customers made plans to update their homes.

“Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 7.6% due to annualising strong sales from the end of Clearance last year.

“Fashion sales were up 5.0% driven by demand for our own-brand fashion. For example; sales of our own-brand womenswear brand Modern Rarity were up 52%. Womenswear accessories had a particularly strong week, with sales up 14.1% on last year.”
