Sky 1 is celebrating this summer with some Great Little Britons, a series of six one-off documentaries, shining a spotlight on some of the nation’s most dedicated perfectionists.
Be it profession or hobby, Great Little Britons examines those who strive for excellence in their chosen pursuit, as they compete to be winners in their field and lift trophies of victory.
The show kicks off tonight (July 4) on Sky 1 HD and Sky 1 at 8pm.
Each documentary focuses on a different competition. Tonight’s subject is cake decorators, who come together as they prepare for the annual Cake International Competition in London..
The theme on July 11 is Show Ponies: horse-mad families who regularly travel countrywide, sacrificing sleep, money and family unity, to do battle on the showing circuit.
The Good Funeral Awards is the focus on July 18, when undertakers participate in the inaugural Good Funeral Guide Awards in Bournemouth. From coffin designers to grave diggers, funeral celebrants to embalmers, the camaraderie and black humour as Britain’s best gather to honour the funeral industry’s most skilled workers.
In the July 25 edition, more than 60 bands travel to Bradford for the annual Yorkshire Brass Band Championships and this film examines the obsession for four very different bands.
August 1 documents the fortunes of a dedicated group of extremely competitive hairdressers when they descend on Bournemouth for the National Federation of Hairdressers Regional Bournemouth and Reading Competition.
Finally, the August 8 show features the Bradford Bulls Super League rugby team cheerleaders, The Bulletes, as they follow a tough training regime. For the first time the squad of 11 are entering the UK National cheerleading championships, chasing the first prize trophy. But with just eight weeks until the big event, every girl is fighting to keep their place in the squad.
