TJ Hughes opens in Walsall’s former Woolies

Big brand discount department store TJ Hughes opened its latest store on Friday, in Walsall.
It completes a hat trick of recent openings across the Midlands for the retailer, which had new launches in Hanley and Derby last month.

All three new sites are former Woolworth stores. Each of the new outlets has created around 110 jobs locally, and the company has identified staff previously employed in the stores in order to leverage past experience and local interest.

Thirty ex-Woolworth staff have already been hired for the Derby and Hanley stores.

TJ Hughes now has 52 stores in the UK in addition to its online operations, and employs over 4,000 staff. Backed by European private equity firm Silverfleet Capital, it announced impressive year-end results last week, showing a 9.1% rise in sales and profits up by 30%.
