Waitrose customers embrace alfresco dining

Waitrose’s total sales – excluding fuel – for last week (to August 27) were 8.2% higher than last year.

According to the supermarket chain’s personnel director Helen Hyde, this result was driven by “warm weather and popular promotions, with shoppers preparing for an alfresco style bank holiday weekend. The soaring temperatures boosted barbecue products which saw a 69% uplift, and salad sales increased by 24%.”

She continued: “As customers kept cool, ice lollies saw an uplift of 108%, with hand-held ice creams up 100%. Rosé wine and gin were among the most popular tipples, seeing sales rise by 65 and 36% respectively.”

Helen concluded: “Customers were clearly enjoying time in their gardens, as outdoor plant sales blossomed by 11%.”
