Waitrose shoppers opt for Autumnal fare

Sales excluding fuel rose by 0.6% per cent last week (to Saturday August 19) at Waitrose, as the cooler weather saw shoppers stocking up on typically autumnal items.

The supermarket chain’s IT director Mike Sackman noted thatroot vegetables were in demand, for example, as parsnip sales increased by 39%. In a similar vein, ready meal sales rose by 12.5%, hot pies by 34% and hot beverages by 7.5%.”

He added that sweet treats were also high on people’s shopping lists last week, as sales of premium ice cream rose by 20% and pre-packed cakes increased by 9%. A promotion on Waitrose 1 exotic fruit was popular with customers too, generating a sales uplift of 15%.
