Weather affects Waitrose weekly trade

Waitrose’ total divisional sales – excluding fuel – were up 1.4% last week (to June 18), with year-on-year growth affected by the cool and wet weather.

The grocery multiple’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse commented: “Last week’s unseasonal temperatures meant that instead of firing up their barbecues, consumers opted for warming soups, which increased by 8%. And flower sales rose by 17% as customers added some much-needed brightness to their homes.”

Strong sales of the supermarket chain’s new premium food range Waitrose 1 range helped drive uplifts in a number of categories, with yogurt sales up by 44%, coffee by 13% and pasta by 19%.

Popular Father’s Day gifts included socks and mugs, while sales of brandy and whisky led to an overall increase of 4% in spirits.
