Swiss kitchenware brand Zyliss has redesigned the Susi 4 Garlic Press – one of its most iconic tools.

Karl Zysset’s original garlic press dates back to 1948 and remains one of the inventions most closely associated with the brand.

Heidi Thomas, Head of Marketing UK & Ireland at DK Household Brands, which includes Zyliss, commented: “The garlic press is where the Zyliss story began, so Susi 4 is a particularly special launch for us. Karl Zysset’s original design changed the way people prepared garlic at home, and with Susi 4 we’ve worked hard to honour that legacy while making the experience even better for today’s cooks. It keeps everything people have always loved about a Zyliss garlic press – efficiency, comfort and clever engineering, while introducing meaningful improvements in ergonomics, cleaning and material choices.”

Inspired by bicycle brake levers, Zysset’s original design paired curved aluminium handles with clever leverage to make garlic crushing more comfortable and efficient.

That same spirit of problem-solving design continues today in The Zyliss Susi 4 Garlic Press, which combines the ease-of-use of the original garlic press with a more ergonomic shape, easier cleaning and thoughtful material upgrades. Zyliss positions its products around clever functionality, ergonomics, durability and a distinctly Swiss sensibility, all of which are reflected in this redesign.

A nationwide survey commissioned by Zyliss has revealed that the garlic press is the UK’s favourite way to prepare garlic. Nearly one in three Brits (31%) say crushing garlic with a press is their go-to method, placing it ahead of finely slicing or chopping by hand (25%), grating or mincing it (14%), using pre-prepared jarred garlic (14%), roasting whole cloves in the oven (4%) and using frozen garlic (4%).

The new Susi 4 Garlic Press has been developed to make pressing garlic quicker, cleaner and more comfortable in everyday use. At the heart of the redesign is a 30% larger garlic chamber, allowing more cloves to be pressed at once, with no peeling required. Longer ergonomic handles improve grip and leverage, while the cast aluminium body delivers robust, long-lasting ! performance.

A key innovation is the new stainless steel swing-grid mechanism, which automatically swivels out when the handle is fully extended. Combined with a 180° opening and a sidewall-free design, this gives full access for effortless cleaning and easy removal of garlic residue – eliminating the need for a separate cleaning tool.

The Susi 4 also features a PFAS-free non-stick coating for easier food release, as well as plastic-free, fully recyclable kraft paper packaging, in line with Zyliss’ wider sustainable packaging philosophy. Zyliss has been transitioning hero products into a new modern look with a sustainable focus, including recyclable packaging and more responsible material choices where appropriate.
