Cold snap spurs sales of canned soup and crumpets at Waitrose

Sales excluding fuel for Waitrose were up 0.8% last week (to Saturday March 3) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket grocery chain’s IT director Mike Sackman said: “Snow and ice across the country prompted customers to seek out warming food and drink. For example, canned soup sales surged by 50% and crumpets by 35%.”

Vegetables also “had a strong week”, with potato sales up 27% and root vegetables up by 17%.Hot drinks were another popular choice, with roast and ground coffee sales leaping by 16%.
