Groupe SEB buys stake in Indian appliance firm

The French electrical appliances and cookware giant Groupe SEB has acquired a 55% stake in Maharaja Appliances, an Indian producer of small electricals.

Groupe SEB, whose brands include Tefal, Rowenta, Krups and Moulinex, said that the deal – the terms of which are undisclosed – would give the company “a foothold in India’s small electrical appliances market”.

Maharaja’s product offer covers food prep lines, kettles, toasters, irons and heaters, all sold under the Whiteline brand. It is also a major OEM (original equipment manufacturer) supplier to brands including Tefal, Philips and Electrolux. In the year to March 2011 it had sales of €21m.
