Dunelm could open a new store in Surrey under plans to redevelop a former Homebase site.
Planning proposals have been submitted to transform the vacant Homebase store in Ewell, which has reportedly stood empty for around 18 months following the collapse of the DIY retailer.
The 47,000 sq ft building would be divided into two separate retail units, with Dunelm set to occupy one half of the site.
The second unit is expected to be occupied by a food retailer, although its identity has not yet been confirmed.
Under the proposals, the former Homebase garden centre would also be demolished and the space incorporated into a redesigned car park.
The potential opening would add to Dunelm’s growing UK store estate as the homewares retailer continues to pursue expansion opportunities across the country.
Dunelm has previously outlined ambitions to significantly increase its physical presence, targeting around 100 additional stores over the medium term as it looks for new locations and opportunities to relocate existing shops.
The Ewell proposal also represents another potential new use for part of the former Homebase estate following the retailer’s administration.
Speculation locally has suggested M&S could take the second unit after the retailer acquired a number of former Homebase locations earlier this year. However, there has been no confirmation that M&S is involved in the Ewell development.
The planning application is currently under consultation, with public comments on the proposals being accepted until 6 October.
