The owners of independent homewares retailer Hargreaves of Buxton have announced their retirement, with the historic Derbyshire store’s premises now up for sale.
Martin and Kelly confirmed the news in a statement on social media, following reports that the property had been placed on the market.
The pair explained that the decision had not been taken lightly, with the business having played a significant part in their lives.
“We have reached a point where a change is necessary, and the sale of our beloved shop is a necessary step in this new direction,” they said.
Established in 1865, Hargreaves of Buxton has been a familiar name on the town’s high street for more than 160 years. Originally specialising in china and glassware, the business has evolved into an independent homewares destination, offering cookware, kitchenware, tableware, gifts and home accessories.
Located on Spring Gardens, the store has built a reputation for its extensive product range and personal customer service, becoming a longstanding fixture of Buxton’s retail community.
Over the years, Hargreaves has continued to evolve, adapting its offering to changing shopping habits while maintaining its traditional independent retail identity.
The business celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2025, marking a significant milestone in its history.
Despite the retirement announcement, the owners have reassured customers that the store will continue trading as normal for the time being, with new product deliveries and festive stock arriving ahead of Christmas.
“We wanted to personally share this news with you to ensure transparency,” they added.
“Rest assured, we will continue to operate as usual in the interim, with new product deliveries and festive items arriving soon. We look forward to seeing you again in the coming weeks.”
