Godalming Great British Bake Off is ‘great success’

The first ever Godalming Great British Bake Off, which took place during the annual Godalming Food Festival on July 7, was a ‘great success’, according to Tessa Droy, proprietor of the Surrey’s town The Farmhouse Kitchen cookshop.

“There were over 100 entrants and it was a great success – fantastic for us, and great for Godalming,” Tessa said. “The standard of baking was amazing and I’m proud to say three of the four categories were won by customers of mine.”

The four entry categories were Best Traybake, Best Cake, Best Cupcakes and Best Biscuits/Cookies and the judging panel included special guest Dhruv Baker (MasterChef winner 2010). Eight prizes were up for grabs including tea for four and dinner for two at local establishments.

During the day, Tessa said she gave out free cakes in the shop “including flapjacks and chocolate brownies made by me – I love baking cakes!”

Outside the shop, cookery demos were held by local professional chefs, plus Dhruv Baker and a chef from New Orleans.

The Bake Off was a Godalming & District Chamber of Commerce initiative and lots of local retailers were involved. “It was just a lovely day all around and we hope to do it again,” says Tessa.
