Harrods wins UK gia prize

Harrods has been named as the UK winner of the IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) programme for 2017-2018.

The London department store joins 26 other home and housewares retailers from 25 countries in the competition, which is organised and sponsored by The International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago and the International Housewares Association (IHA) of the US.

Harrods’ mission is to be ‘the number-one department store in the world for luxury merchandise’. Its landmark store in Knightsbridge store includes a cookshop on the second floor, along with ‘home appliances’, ‘entertaining at home’ and several ‘luxury home’ departments. Harrods also operates 14 boutiques across Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

The gia programme was created by the International Home + Housewares Show and IHA to foster innovation and excellence in home and housewares retailing throughout the world.

The competition is structured on a two-tier level – national and global – to honour independent and multiple home and housewares retailers. They are judged on: overall mission statement; vision and strategy; store design and layout; visual merchandising, displays and window displays; marketing, advertising and promotions; customer service and staff training; and innovation

Each national winner will be invited to the International Home + Housewares Show, held from March 10-13, where a jury will then select from them up to five Global Honorees, and the winners of the Martin M. Pegler Award for Excellence in Visual Merchandising and the gia Digital Commerce Award for Excellence in Online Retailing. The results will be announced at a festive awards dinner during the Show on March 10.

The national winners will also be featured in a gia showcase at the Show, where visuals of their award-winning store design and branding ideas, visual merchandising and displays will be on revealed.
