John Lawson, a well-known figure in the independent housewares and hardware sector and former president of the British Hardware Federation, has passed away peacefully shortly after celebrating his 89th birthday.

His family announced the news on the Lawson’s Facebook page, paying tribute to a businessman whose career spanned horticulture, retail and community service.

Born in Elburton to Francis and Joan Lawson, John began his working life in the family horticultural business, Dorey & Lawson, which was renowned for its Elburton tomatoes. In 1971, he moved into retail, leading FTB Lawson Ltd and developing the Lawson’s stores in Plymouth, Totnes and Tavistock over the next three decades.735844570 1794485125303100 1856742076531594195 n Independent retail stalwart John Lawson has passed away aged 89

During his retail career, Lawson became a respected voice within the independent hardware trade. He served as president of the British Hardware Federation and played a key role in establishing Home Hardware in North Devon to support independent retailers.

According to his family, his business philosophy was built on honesty, keeping his word and fostering strong relationships with staff, customers, suppliers and fellow retailers.

Away from retail, Lawson dedicated much of his time to charitable and community organisations. He was actively involved with Round Table and Plymouth Rotary, driving the charity Christmas sleigh for many years until retiring from the role last year. He also chaired the Fox House charity, supporting homeless people in Plymouth, and remained involved until last year.

John was married to his wife Jennifer for 58 years. Together they worked side by side in the family business while raising their family. Outside work, he enjoyed classic cars, was a member of the Devon Woodturners and belonged to the Art Society.

In a tribute, his family said John “embraced life’s joys heartily and faced its challenges with resilience and dignity,” adding that he “made a meaningfully positive difference to the people around him” through his work, hobbies and commitment to others.

He is survived by his children, Susan, Liz and Tom, and their families.

A memorial service celebrating John’s life will take place at Yealmpton Community Methodist Church, Chapel Road, Yealmpton, on Saturday 8 August at 3pm.
