John Lewis Home sales up 0.5%

John Lewis’ total sales for the week to Saturday (February 11) were £73 million.

This figure is down 2% on last year. Liz Mihell, head of shop trade for London & the south-east, blamed the later fall of Valentine’s Day this year for causing the shift in sales.

Sales in Home were up 0.5% year-on-year. Furniture had a particularly strong week, up 8.1%.

Liz said: “Lighting also saw strong growth, with customers bringing a little brightness into their homes during the cold weather. Bedding, towels and mattresses also all saw sales rise this week.”

She added: “EHT (Electricals & Home Technology) sales were down 2.9%. Communication technology, however, continued its strong performance, seeing an uplift of 5.7%.

“Fashion was down 2.7% on last year. But womenswear grew by 3.7%, with sales of Spring/Summer pieces performing strongly, as customers begin to look ahead to the new season.”
