John Lewis shoppers celebrate Father’s Day

Total sales for John Lewis last week (to Saturday June 16) were up 5.7% on the same week last year.

The department store groups’ buying director for fashion Christine Kasoulis said “sales benefited from customers buying Father’s Day gifts and enjoying offers as we price-matched a competitor’s promotion”.

Due to Father’s Day, menswear had “a good week” delivering a sales growth of 19.7%, with men’s socks among the most popular gifts, up 34%.

Home sales were down 0.4%. However, Father’s Day gifts were also in demand within Gifts, Cook and Dine, which delivered overall growth of 3.6%. Outdoor living also continued to perform well, with sales up 3.8%.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 6.2% on the same period last year. Christine commented: “We saw strong sales of gaming products, and TVs continued to do well as customers prepared to watch the beginning of the World Cup.”
