Divisional sales excluding fuel were down 0.1% for Waitrose last week (to Saturday June 16) compared with the same week last year when the UK enjoyed warmer weather.
The supermarket chain’s customer director Martin George said Father’s Day led to a strong week of sales for spirits, including cognac, while men’s toiletries had the best week of sales excluding Christmas. He noted that “a glowing highlight was men’s skincare, as shoppers treated their Dads to a spot of pampering”.
Vegan and vegetarian food increased in sales, with ready meals proving particularly popular. Waitrose recently added 50 new vegan and vegetarian products to its expanding meat-free range.
