John Lewis shoppers prepare for World Cup and Royal Wedding

Total sales at John Lewis for last week (to Saturday May 12) were up 3.3% on last year, mainly due to shoppers buying products for the warm weather.

The department store group’s operations director Dino Rocos said Home sales were down 5.4%. However, he added: “We saw very strong sales of royal wedding memorabilia and expect that to continue this week as customers prepare to celebrate the royal wedding.”

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 8.5%.  The standout areas were fans, bought by customers wanting to stay cool, and TVs bought by customers preparing to watch the World Cup.

Fashion sales were up 7.4%. Sales of menswear were up 10.4% and sales of womenswear were up 9.3% as customers bought clothing for the warmer weather and took advantage of price matches on competitors’ promotions.
