Last year Ashford Borough Council launched its E-Cycle Revival: six community electrical repair, reuse and recycle events across the borough.
Since then the scheme has been hailed a success, with just over three tonnes of appliances handed in for recycling and on top of that, 52 were fixed at repair cafes and 209 donated to local charities.
The E-Cycle Revival scheme was launched by Ashford Borough Council in October 2023, in partnership with the not-for-profit organisation Material Focus.
It is one of 40 campaigns taking place across the country and anyone with small items such as kettles toasters and hairdryers can find out where to recycle them on this website.
Steve Campkin, cabinet member for climate, environment and sustainability for Ashford Borough Council, said: “We organised these events over six months in rural areas of the borough, with the aim of highlighting how residents can recycle, reuse or donate their old electricals and to also realise just how many they have sitting in their homes unused.
“All the events were well received by local residents, with over 250 people attending them. This would not have been possible without the support from the local Parish and Community Councils, volunteers and local Repair Café who gained two more volunteers to join their now busy team.”
Material Focus estimates about 100,000 tonnes of electricals go into landfill across the UK every year.
