Mincer sales rocket in wake of horsemeat shocks

Argos is reporting a surge in sales of meat mincers, grinders and sausage makers as a result of the recent horsemeat scandal.

Mincer sales rocket in wake of horsemeat shocks

Shoppers shocked by the revelation that so many shop-bought products are not what they claim to be are now choosing to roll up their sleeves instead and produce burgers and bangers in their own kitchens.

Argos says it has seen purchases of meat grinders and mincers double in recent weeks, with customers snapping up gadgets like the Breville meat grinder and sausage maker. And searches for “meat mincers” on argos.co.uk have increased by 245% over the last four weeks.

Argos homewares buyer Kate Gibson said: “We’ve seen high levels of demand for meat preparation equipment recently, particularly meat grinder attachments that can be used on traditional baking mixers.

“This behaviour suggests that the nation’s meat eaters want to know exactly what’s going into their food – and it’s so easy to make burgers from scratch with all the recipes available on the internet.”

She added: “To meet customer demand we’ve increased stocks to our stores by double the usual amount.”

And mincers received a further boost last Monday evening, when Michel Roux Jr showed how to make his version of shepherd’s pie on BBC2’s Food & Drink programme. The celebrity chef put the lamb and vegetables through a mincer, recommending it as the best method.
