waitrose mummy and grandma fine china mugs for web medium Mother’s Day gifts boost homeware sales for WaitroseA strong week for online sales, combined with preparations for Mothering Sunday, helped generate a total sales uplift of 3.3% (excluding fuel) for Waitrose last week (to February 27).

The supermarket chain’s finance director Loraine Woodhouse said online groceries saw “particularly robust growth” with sales up 14.1% year-on-year, while sales of Mother’s Day cards grew by 10%.

The homeware category was boosted by sales of Mother’s Day gifts, including candles and vases, which helped generate a 10.2% increase.

Loraine Woodhouse added that sparkling wine and Champagne are also likely to be enjoyed during Sunday’s celebrations, with sales up by 6.8% and 4.8% respectively.
