Riding the crest of the baking wave is the launch this week of The Cake Awards – the only such event dedicated to recognising excellence in cake.
The awards will encompass everything from tea room slices and the grandest of hotel fancies to the myriad varieties on the shelves of supermarkets, bakery shops and retail food chains across the country, in a mission to celebrate the very best British cakes.
The products will be judged on April 9 and 10 by a panel of experts including Bruce Langlands, director of food at Harrods; Will Torrent, award winning pâtissier and chocolatier; and Allan Jenkins, editor of Observer Food Monthly. Only those cakes that have it all – excellent presentation, quality ingredients, recipe innovation, texture, taste and value will triumph.
The awards, due to become an annual event, are now open to enter and comprise the categories: Tea Room Cake, Hotel Cake, Bakery Shop Cake, Wholesale Bakery Cake, Wedding Cake, Retail Christmas Cake, Supermarket Cake, Celebration/Novelty Cake, Free From Cake, Bake at Home Cake and Cake of the Year (nomination only). Winners will be announced on June 19.
