Poundland takes a dozen Woolworths stores

The retailer, which sells everything for £1, already has more than 200 shops and 6,400 staff but intends to add 30 outlets this year and create 1,000 new jobs. It is hoping now to acquire more Woolworths sites.

The group is flourishing in the recession and attracts over 2m customers every week.

Chief executive Jim McCarthy said it was “fantastic news that Poundland has filled the Woolworths gap in a number of product categories”.

He added that the ex-Woolworths staff would bring great experience to Poundland.
