Total sales for John Lewis for the week ending Saturday (May 27) were £76.2m, down 5.6% on last year.
The department store group’s director of merchandising operations Jon Williams commented that while Home sales were down 4.8%, the warmer weather resulted in record BBQ sales and a record week for outdoor living, with sales up 54%.
EHT (Electrical and Home Technology) sales were down 6.8%, with a 2.3% uplift in small electricals due to a significant increase in the sale of fans.
Jon added that fashion sales were down 5% “due to annualising of strong price match promotions in the same week last year”. But warm weather products in fashion saw a 15% uplift with a record week of sales for sandals, up 26%.
