Richard Gilbert gets athletic to raise funds for charity

The Triathlon was just one of many sporting events held over a two-week period in July as part of the annual Wenlock Olympian Games, the first of which took place in 1850 and were the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games (www.wenlock-olympian-society.org.uk).

The 127th Wenlock Olympian Games will take place from July 6 to July 21. A triathlon is an athletic contest consisting of three different events, typically swimming, cycling, and long-distance running.

Last year Richard completed his first Wenlock Olympian Triathlon, in support of The Epilepsy Society, raising more than £500 for the charity.

The Epilepsy Society is a charity very close to Richard’s heart as his son (pictured with Richard) was diagnosed with epilepsy a few years ago. “Fortunately, our son’s condition is currently very well controlled but many are not so fortunate,” Richard said.

This year, Richard is running to raise funds for industry charity the Rainy Day Trust. He said: “Until the recent bira [British Independent Retailers Association] conference I hadn’t fully realised what great work the Rainy Day Trust does for members of our industry who have fallen on hard times or have suffered poor health.

“As a result, I felt inspired to raise money this year for what I believe is an extremely worthy cause. So help the Rainy Day Trust gain from my pain!”
