Sales of ‘Chinese-style crockery’ up 500% at Waitrose

Total sales excluding fuel were up 0.8% last week (to February 6) for Waitrose, driven by Valentine’s Day preparations and promotions themed around Chinese New Year.

Horticulture sales in the supermarket chain’s branches were up by 2.6% in total, while sales of cut flowers in branches rose by 6.3%. Valentine’s gifts saw a 54% uplift.

Waitrose personnel director Helen Hyde added that Chinese New Year, which began on Monday (February 8), “continues to grow in popularity among our shoppers” with fresh stir fry ingredients up 70% and fresh sauces up 109%.

“The occasion also led to a 500% surge in sales of Chinese-style crockery driving a 6.7% uplift across total Homeware sales.”
