Selfridges ‘selling more espresso cups than mugs’

Changing drinking habits have pushed sales of espresso cups ahead of mugs for the first time at Selfridges.

Selfridges 'selling more espresso cups than mugs'

The top London department store told the Mail Online on Friday that it had sold double last year’s quantity of the diminutive coffee cups this year – and that they were selling twice as fast as mugs.

Buying manager cookshop and dining, Christopher Gardner, told the Mail: “While the world believes we are a nation whose lives revolve around the great British cup of tea, our sales show clearly that we’re becoming a land run on coffee.

“With espresso cups outselling tea mugs for the first time, and sales of Italian coffee machines on the rise, our customers are becoming real coffee aficionados searching out single estate beans and snapping up the paraphernalia needed to create barista quality coffee at home.”

The report also said that the store’s sales of coffee machines were 20% up on the year, the best-selling brand being Lavazza, notching up an 85% increase.
