Waitrose sales (excluding petrol) rose 14% to £122.86m in the week to June 15, boosted by a wine and champagne promotion.

Shoppers took the opportunity to stock up on rosé (up 90%), ready for the summer months ahead, with a Spanish rosé being the preferred choice. Fine wines were also particularly popular, with red up 130% and white up 76%.

Waitrose finance director Tom Athron said: “With weddings, graduations and summer parties all in full swing, champagne sales soared by 63% in preparation for celebratory toasts. Father’s Day gifts such as mugs and bottle bags were 75% up too as families prepared to celebrate the occasion on Sunday.

Strawberries were up 40% too, with other summer fruits such as blueberries, grapes and soft fruit also popular with shoppers, all more than 20% up.
