Sausage rolls, along with glasses of wine, are essential for the perfect buffet, according to a survey by Waitrose.

Waitrose reveals Britain's ultimate finger food

In a poll commissioned by the upmarket supermarket chain’s newspaper ‘Waitrose Weekend’ to discover the most popular celebration foods, the humble sausage roll topped the charts. Over 67% of people claimed it was their ‘go to’ for celebration spreads.

Sandwiches were a close second with over 66% of the votes, while cheese (65%), trifle (42%) and cake (50%) were also popular choices, showing that Brits crave classic fare the most.

White wine was the most popular refreshment with over 70% of the votes, while 66% opted for red wine and 64% for lager. But fruit juice came close behind with 62% of people choosing it as their top tipple.

David Roshier, Editor of ‘Waitrose Weekend’, said: “Our survey shows that, despite the influence of world cuisines on our dining habits, when it comes to buffets everybody still loves the good old-fashioned sausage roll – it’s the ultimate finger food.”
