Waitrose shoppers go alfresco

Total sales at Waitrose were 1.2% higher last week (to Saturday June 3) compared with the year ago period.

The supermarket chain’s retail director Ben Stimson said sunshine over the bank holiday and the early part of the week influenced what customers bought.

He noted that the retailer’s ‘food to go’ range performed well, with overall sales growing by 16% as customers took to alfresco dining.

Salad and sandwich sales were both up by more than 15% and snacking fruit sales increased by more than 31%.

Ben added: “Despite some strong promotional activity in the equivalent week last year, beers, wine and spirits sales still saw significant increases with sparkling wine up 21%, speciality beer up 24%, Pimm’s up 55% and Aperol up 70%.

“It was another good week for health and beauty too, as sun care sales increased by 35%, while sales of our gardening range grew by 17%.”
