Waitrose shoppers select ‘heart-warming’ options

Waitrose concluded its financial year with total sales excluding fuel up by 3.3% last week (to Saturday January 28) compared with the same week last year.

The supermarket chain’s retail director Ben Stimson said the fall of Chinese New Year on Saturday helped sales of Chinese ready meals increase by 31%, while Burns Night saw malt whisky sales rise by 11%.

He added: “It was an excellent week for beer, wine and spirit sales too. Wines were up by more than 8%, beer sales by more than 7% and spirits by almost 9%. Gin sales also continue to rise, up 25%.

Meanwhile, “another very cold week saw customers turn to heart-warming options, as sales of hot pies and vegetable accompaniments jumped by 43% and 20% respectively”.
