Warm weather fuels cool treats at Waitrose

Total sales, excluding fuel, were up 25.5% for Waitrose in the week ending Saturday April 15 compared with the same week last year.

But the supermarket chain’s retail director Ben Stimson noted that “comparisons are heavily distorted, as the equivalent week last year was not the build-up to Easter”.

Barbecue food saw strong sales with frozen burgers and sausages up 127%. Dips also rose by 33%. Cold drinks were enjoyed too, with ice cube sales increasing by 68%.

Many customers chose to spend time in their gardens with horticulture performing well: outdoor plant sales rose by 57%.

The warm weather also encouraged people to indulge in cool treats with children’s lollies sales up by 104% and ice cream sales boosted by 43%.
