Total sales for department store group John Lewis were £79.4 million last week (to Saturday January 20), up 2.6% on the same week last year.
According to Alison Smith, head of shop trade for the South and West, Home sales were down 0.5% – although furniture sales were up 1.9%, driven by fitted furniture (+19%) and made to order (+21%). In the last week of Clearance, gift food seasonal sales were up 7%.
Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 2.6%, she said, “with standout performances in wearable technology, as sales shifted from fitness watches to fitness trackers while the January well-being trend continues.”
She added; “The wet weather drove a strong performance in tumble dryers, while beverages (driven by sales of coffee machines) also had a strong week.”
Fashion sales were up 7.7% with a “particularly strong performance” in cold weather clothing (+22%) and own brand (+5%).
