Karen Forret of Wilkies Trading has been appointed President of the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira), taking over from John Jones following the association’s Annual General Meeting.
Ms Forret succeeds Mr Jones, of Philip Morris & Son, who has stepped down after two years in the role, having guided the association through a challenging period for independent retailers.
Her appointment comes at a time when businesses across the UK’s high streets continue to face pressures from rising operating costs, sluggish economic growth and uncertainty surrounding government policy.
As the new President, Ms Forret will help represent the interests of independent retailers and support Bira’s work in campaigning for a more favourable trading environment.
Reflecting on his time in the role, Mr Jones said: “It’s been a huge honour to serve as President of Bira. For independent retailers, the lack of growth in the economy and the political decisions forced upon us have not made it an easy two years.
“These challenges show more than ever why our sector needs an organisation like Bira to collectively achieve what we can’t do individually.”
One of the key developments during his presidency was the launch of the Bira forum, providing retailers with a platform to discuss industry challenges, share advice and contribute to the association’s lobbying priorities.
Mr Jones also stressed the importance of independent businesses continuing to adapt to changing market conditions.
“Small businesses can be more nimble than their bigger counterparts, and we need to use that to our advantage,” he said.
“Philip Morris & Son is 180 years old, but the business as it is now in no way resembles the business it was originally. I think the key to surviving and thriving is evolving.”
Despite the difficulties facing the sector, he remains optimistic about the future of independent retail, although he called for further business rates reform and changes to planning regulations to help high streets thrive.
Welcoming his successor, Mr Jones said: “Karen brings a huge amount of experience to the role and she’ll be an excellent person to steer Bira in the right direction.”
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, also thanked the outgoing President for his contribution and welcomed the transition.
“On behalf of everyone at Bira, I want to thank John for everything he has given to the role over the last two years.
“He has led us through a really tough period for independent retail, always with the interests of members at heart, and the launch of the forum will be a lasting part of his legacy.
“I’m delighted he will remain involved as Karen takes on the role.”
